Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor who died this week at 61, was diagnosed with lung cancer a few months ago before succumbing to the disease on Monday, his longtime publicist, Jennifer Allen, said on Thursday.
When Ms. Allen confirmed his death this week, she said he had died after a brief illness. A 2014 profile by The New York Times Magazine said that Mr. Braugher was intensely private and “stopped drinking alcohol and smoking years ago.”
Though he had an expansive career, Mr. Braugher was best known for his roles as a stoic, composed police officer on “Homicide: Life on the Street,” the 1990s NBC police procedural, and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” the Fox sitcom that later moved to NBC.
Mr. Braugher won Emmy Awards in 1998 for his work as Detective Frank Pembleton on “Homicide” and in 2006 for his role as a coolheaded crook in the six-part FX crime thriller “Thief.” He was nominated four times for his portrayal of Capt. Raymond Holt in “Brookyn Nine-Nine.”
